The challenge Singapore couldn't ignore
Singapore generates vast quantities of medical and hazardous waste every year. Disposing of it safely is non-negotiable and for decades, that process has come at a cost - energy consumption, grid reliance, and an environmental footprint that sits uncomfortably alongside the nation's ambitious sustainability agenda.
Since 1983, Chem Solv Technologies Pte Ltd, a waste management service have grown into one of Singapore's most important waste treatment providers. They understand the waste problem and identified that they needed a solution that saves money and more importantly protects the environment.
We were up for the challenge
When Chem Solv came to Addfield Projects, they knew exactly what they were looking for, a high-capacity incinerator that could completely and efficiently destroy up to 4000 tonnes of clinical waste every year and generate electricity in the process, turning one of Singapore’s most pressing environmental challenges into a genuine energy asset.
While it sounds like a complex project, it is not the first waste-to-energy plant that we have designed and manufactured and we were confident that we could handle the job.
Choosing the right partner
Chem Solv didn't rush this decision. They reviewed the market thoroughly visiting operational sites, evaluating installations from Addfield Projects and several competitors, and crucially taking the time to speak not just to our team but to the end users running our machines day to day.
Ultimately, Addfield Projects stood out to Chem Solv due to our proven track record of successful installations of similar needs and waste types.
After many planning meetings and assessments, it was mutually agreed that the R500 Rotary waste-to-energy incinerator was the best for the job. The R500 is a high-capacity incinerator designed to process 500kg of waste every hour, with full energy generation built in. Every component was selected through close collaboration with Chem Solv, with one goal in mind - optimal results, not just at the first few years after commissioning, but for the entire life of the incinerator with proper use and regular servicing.
How the system works
The incineration process of the R500 is simple and effective with the waste arriving in bins that are automatically lifted into the top hopper using the bin tipper system. The waste is pushed through into the chamber through the hopper system and the bin is returned and redirected to a cleaning zone before repeating the cycle.
Rotating primary chamber
The primary chamber rotates at a barely noticeable speed during operation to agitate the waste as it travels the full length of the incinerator reducing in volume by as much as 97% before reaching the automated deashing system at the end.
The gases produced in the process are then directed into the heat recovery system, where they're converted into significant quantities of clean electricity. Enough electricity to power the entire site, reducing Chem Solv's dependence on the national grid entirely. All remaining gases pass through our advanced secondary chamber and filter towers, removing every toxin before the clean air is returned safely to the environment.
What this means in practice
This isn't just an operational win for Chem Solv, it's a demonstration of what modern waste management can look like when sustainability is designed from within.
Every day this facility runs, it is safely destroying hazardous waste, generating clean energy, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting Singapore's national sustainability goals. It is a profitable and accountable operation and we are proud to have been a part of it.
